How to Market Your Wedding Photography Business

Content Marketing

As a wedding pro, I know you wear many hats when it comes to your business, and marketing can often get pushed down on the never-ending list of things to do. However, wedding photography marketing is one of the best ways to grow your business and achieve your goals. If you want to learn how to market your wedding photography business, then keep reading because this post is for you! I’ll cover the three steps you need to take before creating a single piece of content as well as eight ways you can market your business.

How to Market Your Wedding Photography Business

Identify What Makes You Different

Before you invest any time or money into your business’s marketing plan, you first need to be clear about what you have to offer. The wedding industry is filled with more talent than ever before, but just because there are other photographers or wedding vendors who offer the same services as you, doesn’t mean there is no room for you.

I firmly believe that every wedding pro has something unique to offer, and the first step to wedding photographer marketing is to get crystal clear on what that is. Sit down and ask yourself some questions.

  • Why do I do what I do?
  • What excites me about my work?
  • What type of clients do I love to work with?
  • What have past couples said about my services?
  • Is there a specific location or service that I am knowledgeable about?

Believe me, I know how hard it can be to pinpoint specific traits that make you different from your competition. In fact, this was exactly what happened to me when I went through my rebranding process earlier this year. It wasn’t until I sat down with my copywriter (shoutout to The Literary Co.) that I began to realize what unique traits I brought to the table.

*Pro Tip – If you’re struggling to understand what sets you apart, it can be helpful to talk to an outsider. Consider reaching out to an industry friend or copywriter/marketing pro to get some additional insight into what makes your business unique.

Define Your Marketing Goals – what do you want to achieve?

Now that you have a good understanding of what you want to offer and why clients should purchase from you, you want to define your marketing goals. What do you want to achieve? Of course, everyone would love more sales, but get more specific than that.

Do you want to:

  • establish brand presence
  • get more eyes on your website
  • engage readers & encourage clicks
  • highlight your experience & establish yourself as an SME
  • showcase your portfolio in more detail
  • encourage readers to click on the contact page
  • build community
  • grow your email list

As you can see, there is so much more to marketing than booking more clients. And yes, while getting more inquiries is important, it shouldn’t be your only marketing goal. Think long-term and decide on a few goals that will get you headed in the right direction.

*Pro Tip – once you’ve set your marketing goals, review them quarterly to ensure they still align with your overall goals and make adjustments as needed.

Create a Marketing Plan (and stick with it)

Now it’s time to take all the information you’ve learned and put it into action. Ask yourself how you can achieve the goals you set.

If you want to get more eyes on your website, what are the tools you can use to do that? Do you need to strengthen your knowledge of SEO so you can write better blog posts? Do you need to set aside time each week to consistently pin on Pinterest?

Once you’ve set your goals, pick 1-3 platforms to start with and focus your efforts there. Decide what type of content you want to create and how often you want to share it with your audience. Set realistic goals that you can build on moving forward rather than trying to take everything on at once. Consistency is key!

8 Ways to Market Your Wedding Photography Business

There are lots of ways to market your wedding photography business. Here are 8 of the best marketing platforms for wedding vendors.

Your Website

A website is one of the strongest marketing tools there is. It is the foundation for almost all your marketing channels, so this is one of the first tools you want to invest in when starting your wedding business.

The great thing about having a website is you own it. It isn’t subject to algorithms or random platform updates. With a website, you get to control what types of content you share with the world and how often.

A Blog

A blog is one of the best forms of digital marketing for wedding pros. Blogs can help increase web traffic and improve brand awareness, as well as build trust and establish authority with your audience.

Blogging regularly is great for SEO as it frequently updates your website (which Google loves), and is a great way to share your valuable expertise and inspire clients. (Seriously, there are SO many benefits to blogging!). However, writing a blog is so much more than sharing photos and calling it a day. You also need to add text and follow SEO best practices to ensure your blog gets seen by as many readers as possible. Not sure where to start when it comes to SEO for blogging? I created a free checklist that you can use when writing a blog post. Simply, click on the link below to download your copy.

Types of Blog Posts

When it comes to writing blog posts, there are two main types: evergreen and portfolio.

Evergreen blogs are resource blogs that are helpful to clients year-round (ie – How to Elope in Washington or Top 10 Italy Wedding Venues). They never go out of style and only need to be updated to include accurate or more relevant information.

Portfolio blogs, on the other hand, act as a form of inspiration for your clients. With portfolio blogs, you can showcase your best work, share how you helped your clients plan their special day, and showcase fun trends that can inspire potential clients.

Both types are important when it comes to marketing your wedding photography business. To learn more about the difference between evergreen and portfolio blogs, check out the post below!

Pinterest

People go to Pinterest to get inspired. And what better way to inspire them than by sharing your beautiful wedding photos?

Pinterest is more than just a platform with pretty pictures though. It’s also a powerful search engine (aka marketing tool).

If you want to step up your wedding marketing, consider using Pinterest. One thing to keep in mind though is that Pinterest only works if you have a solid blogging strategy in place. The platform relies on fresh content that links to new URLs, so to make the most of your Pinterest marketing efforts, be sure you are blogging consistently.

Wedding Publications or Magazines

Want more eyes on your work AND backlinks to your website? Submitting your photos to digital wedding magazines is a great way to get both of these things.

Not only does submitting your work help boost your confidence, but when your work gets published on other sites, it gives you even more opportunities for other audiences to learn about you. And, the added benefit is that you also get a backlink that you can share on your website which helps boost your overall SEO.

Social Media

Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok are all amazing (not to mention completely free) places to market your wedding photography business. These platforms are great for sharing beautiful images and behind-the-scenes moments that allow you to connect with your audience on an even deeper level.

Other Vendors

Building relationships with other wedding vendors is a great way to market yourself. By being friendly, reliable, and trustworthy you can not only get potential referrals for your business, but you just might make some new industry friends along the way.

A couple of ways vendor relationships can directly benefit your business are through referrals, collaborations on styled shoots, or even a blog swap where you share your expertise with each other’s audiences.

Google Business Profile

Having a Google Business Profile has multiple advantages. Within a few minutes, you can set up a profile to advertise your business on Google. When clients look up your business or services, your Google profile will pop up with all your relevant information.

That’s not the best part though. One of the biggest advantages of having a Google Business Profile is that it allows you to collect and display reviews. Reviews are powerful for any business as they help build trust with prospective clients. If a potential client reads a handful of rave reviews, they will be more inclined to believe that you will give them an amazing experience as well!

*Pro Tip – the more quality reviews you collect, the higher your profile will rank on Google, allowing you to beat the competition in your area.

Wedding Vendor Directories

Wedding vendor directories like Wedding Wire or The Knot can help bring you more inquiries, but it’s important to calculate the cost of advertising on these platforms. While some wedding vendor directories offer free advertising, others require a monthly subscription to advertise on the site.

These platforms aren’t always the best choice for all wedding pros, so before you sign up for a directory with high monthly fees, I recommend marketing your wedding photography business through some of the other ways listed on this blog first and signing up for these platforms only if it aligns with the business goals you have set.

Happy Clients

Last but not least when it comes to marketing your wedding photography is serving your current clients and serving them WELL! Your clients chose you for a reason and they deserve nothing less than your best. From the moment they inquire to the moment their final gallery is delivered, you are making an impression, so make it a good one. If your clients only have amazing things to say about you, chances are they’ll be more than happy to refer you to their friends and family when the time comes for their special day.

Marketing can often feel like just one more task you have to do as a business owner. However, good wedding photographer marketing is essential to helping you achieve your business goals. To market your business successfully, know who you want to serve, define your marketing goals, create a plan, and then watch as the results of all your hard work flow in.
